I thought we were going to have to do some detective work to find Smith-Richardsâs residential centre, but apparently someone gave Simon a leaflet at the meeting. (No one offered me a leaflet.) (No one ever wants me to join their religion, either.)
Penelope still hasnât called. Or texted. Simonâs in a funk about it, but hopefully heâll rally. I sprung for a taxi, so he wouldnât pout about having to take the train or a bus.
âPull over here,â I say to the cabbie.
Simon squints out the window. âHere?â
âApparently,â I say, paying the fare.
We climb out and look across the street. Thereâs a brick building with a tower and a belfry; it might have been a church once. A small, grey-haired man is hurrying away from the door.
âIs that Professor Bunce?â Simon says.
âPennyâs mum?â
âThe other Professor Bunce, her dad.â
âDonât know.â I pull Simonâs arm. âCome on. And donât forget to invite me in if no one else does.â
We jog across the street. Simon looks like heâs going to call out to Professor Bunce, but the man is already half a block away.
The building ahead of us has a large, stone doorframe with the words HOME FOR WAIFS engraved in the lintel. âA little on the nose,â I mutter.
âIs it an orphanage?â Simon asks.
âWas, maybe.â I push the buzzer.
Simon smooths down his hair.
âDonât forget to invite me in,â I whisper.
âWhen do I ever forget?â
âWhen we tried to have breakfast at Dishoom.â
âThat was one time.â
âI miss America,â I say. âAll those âwelcomeâ mats and âcome in, weâre openâ signsâ¦â
Simon snorts. âYou do not miss Americaââ
The door opens. The girl I recognized at Smith-Richardsâs meeting is standing there. Chomsky, how do I know her? Sheâs got to be around our age ⦠Fair skin. Short, brown hair. I know she wasnât at Watford. Are we related somehow, is that how I know her? Her eyes get big when she sees Simon.
âHi,â he says.
The girlâs already rushing away from us, down the hall. Talk about starstruck. Sheâs left the front door open. Simon steps in and looks around.
I fold my arms, waiting.
He turns back to me and grins.
âThis is a good game,â I say flatly. âCan we play this for the rest of our lives?â
Snow reaches out and grabs my elbow, pulling me across the threshold and against him. Heâs laughing silently and kissing my cheek. (For someone who is afraid of looking gay in public, he sure gets off on public displays of affection.) (Thatâs probably connected.)
âSimon!â We both turn towards the voice. Itâs Smith-Richards himself. Dressed like a very wealthy folksinger. âI was hoping Iâd see you again,â he says, clapping a hand on Simonâs back.
Simon doesnât know how to respond to that. He looks a bit dazed. (Snow is very easily impressed by Smith-Richards.) (Or maybe heâs just worried that Smith-Richards can feel his wings.)
I hold out my hand. âHello,â I say. âBasilton Pitch.â
Smith-Richards looks at me for the first time, his hand still on Simonâs shoulder. âPitchâ¦â His eyes light up. âDaphneâs son!â He reaches out with his free hand.
